Within the expansion of protected areas, a new wildlife sanctuary called as the Malai Mahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuary was gazetted, while the existing Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary was expanded. Both these protected areas provide excellent potential for long-term tiger conservation as they lie within a complex of other protected areas. Although tiger densities are likely to be variable across this complex of protected areas, reliable baselines are emerging through capture-recapture methodologies. There is an urgent need to establish the baseline data for this entire region. We have carried out a preliminary round of camera trapping in both MM Hills WS and Cauvery WS. |
