Camera trapping for wildlife with special reference to Small Mammals in parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, and Mizoram in North East India

Camera trapping has been done in some sites in northeastern India for wildlife in general and with special focus on smaller mammals. The main areas covered were: D'Ering Memorial, Mehao and Kane Wildlife Sanctuaries, and Talle Wildlife Sanctuary and Reserved Forest in Arunachal Pradesh; Manas National Park (report being produced separately), Dulung, Kakoi, Ranga and Behali Reserved Forests, and Harmutty and Dejoo tea estates in Assam; Nongkhyllem Wildlife Sanctuary and Trongpleng in Meghalaya, and Murlen National Park in Mizoram. The sites are in tropical rainforest, semievergreen forest, deciduous forest, subtropical hill forest and grassland. The total duration of camera trapping was 56,500 camera hours (excluding Manas). At least 29 species of mammals (669 images) and 17 species of birds (116 images) were camera trapped. These include the Northern Treeshrew (_Tupaia belangeri_), Rhesus Macaque (_Macaca mulatta_), Golden Jackal (_Canis aureus_),Yellow-throated Marten (_Martes flavigula_), Large Indian Civet (_Viverra zibetha_), Small Indian Civet (_Viverricula indica_), Common Palm Civet (_Paradoxurus hermaphroditus_), Masked Palm Civet (_Paguma larvata_), Small Indian Mongoose (_Herpestes auropunctatus_), Crab-eating Mongoose (_H. urva_), Leopard Cat (_Prionailurus bengalensis_), Asian Elephant (_Elephas maximus_), Wild Pig (_Sus scrofa_), Sambar (_Cervus unicolor_), Barking Deer or Red Muntjac (Muntiacus muntjac), Hog Deer (_Axis porcinus_), free-ranging Mithun or Gayal (_Bos frontalis_), Wild Water Buffalo (_Bubalus arnee_), Himalayan Serow (_Capricornis thar_), Red or Burmese Serow (_C. rubidus_) and Crestless Himalayan Porcupine (_Hystrix brachuyra_). A few birds were also captured in the camera traps including Lesser Adjutant Stork (_Leptoptilos javanicus_), Kaleej Pheasant (_Lophura leucomelanos_), Red Junglefowl (_Gallus gallus_), and Blue_]fronted Robin (_Cinclidium frontale_). Among the areas covered, camera trapping has been done for the first time in D'Ering Memorial, Mehao and Kane Wildlife Sanctuaries, Dulung, Kakoi, Ranga and Behali Reserved Forests, Harmutty and Dejoo tea estates, Trongpleng and Murlen National Park. Creation of new protected areas, enlargement of some protected areas, check on habitat loss and poaching, further camera trapping, regulated picnic and awareness drives are recommended.
