Overview projects

Gobierno de Aragon, Departamento de Medio Ambiente (Calvete, C.).
Use of mathematical models to evaluate the impact of Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease (RHD) on wild rabbit populations and the effects of population management on RHD epidemiology: vaccination campaigns, translocations, predator control and habitat management.

Epidemiology of RHD, and therefore its impact on wild rabbit populations is highly dependent of rabbit population dynamics. On the other hand, several management tools, as vaccination campaigns, translocations, predator control and habitat management, are widely used to enhance rabbit populations in Spain and Portugal. However results have been negligible in the most of cases. There are evidences that management can increase the RHD negative impact on rabbit populations in any circunstances, but the effects of these managements on RHD epidemiology, and therefore on rabbit population growth have not been evaluated to date.

Consejería de Medio Ambiente - Junta de Andalucía (Simon Mata, M. A.).
Life - Naturaleza Recuperación de las poblaciones de lince ibérico an Andalucía (LIFE 02 NAT/E/8609).

Conservation of the current Iberian lynx populations in Andalucía by means of monitoring of the evolution of the populations and the basic prey (rabbit). The implementation of actions to improve the lynx habitat and rabbit populations are considered, as well.

APROCA - Andalucía (Feria Carrasco, M. and Chaves, J.).
Life-Lince partnerships. E2: Education Campaign for responsible hunting and prohibit methods of predator´s control.

APROCA is an Association of Landowners of Hunting Areas. The relationship between Iberian Lynx and Hunting areas owners, and secondly hunters, should be taken into consideration in a LIFE Project to recover the species.

Conservation of the Iberian lynx in Portugal.

The Portuguese Iberian lynx project is focused in several work areas that include: (1) Status survey of the species in country; (2) In-situ conservation actions based on habitat restoration (particularly in Malcata and Guadiana valley) and rabbit populations recovery; (3) Aplication of strategic pre-reintroduction activities in the geographic areas pointed above; (4) Conservation Action Plan.

Censo-Diagnótico del lince ibérico.

The breeding populations remain stable, and seem to react to several rabbit projects. Two lynx scats in Sierra Morena mountains outside the Andujar-Cardeña area, and four scats in two diferent places in Montes the Toledo area, have been localized. The rabbit reintroduccions are getting improved, and the manual is almost done.

Previous project:

In the previous national census (1992) the iberian lynx population was estimated to 600-1200 individuals. Actually only two breeding populations have been detected in Spain, one in Andujar-Cardeña (70 Lynx older than a year) and Doñana (25 Lynx ). Outside this population only one scat in Montes de Toledo has been detected. The main regression causes are the rabbit population depletion because of RHD, iligal poaching and land use changes.

Consejería de Medio Ambiente - Junta de Andalucía (Simon Mata, M. A.).
Adecuación de los montes chortal y palanco.

Habitat restoration of public forests of the Consejería de Medio Ambiente in recent (1999) areas of Iberian lynx presence. The improvement aims at the creation of adequate areas to host viable populations of Iberian lynx at large scale.

Centro de cría en semilibertad "La Aliseda". Fase I.

Creation of an Iberian lynx breeding centre in semi-liberty to produce individuals that will be behaviourally capable to survive in nature.

Programa de actuaciones para la conservación del lince ibérico en Andalucía II.
Acciones complementarias para la conservación del lince ibérico.

Investigation of the sanitary status of the wild Iberian lynx populations as well as other animal species sharing the lynx environment (ungulates, domestic and wild carnivores, prey, etc.).

Previous project:

Programa de actuaciones para la conservación del lince ibérico en Andalucía I.

Conservation of the current Iberian lynx populations in Andalucía by means of monitoring the evolution of the populations and lynx' main prey (rabbit). The implementation of actions in regard to the restoration of lynx and rabbit habitat, as well as activities of information propagation and awareness raising on the species is taken into consideration, too.
