Cat News

Besides the two regular annual issues, the Cat Specialist Group in coorporation with its partners produces special numbers of
Cat News covering specific topics.

Status and Conservation Needs of the Arabian Leopard

The Arabian Leopard special issue of Cat News will provide detailed reports of the

Arabian leopard’s situation in Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman and the United

Arab Emirates. With an introduction and additional article about the conservation

framework for the Arabian leopard by Andrew Spalton, readers will learn of the

leopard’s plight from a perspective that is based on several years of fieldwork with

this majestic species. Dr. David Mallon of the Manchester Metropolitan University

has volunteered as guest editor of this special issue. A long-time participant of

Arabian leopard workshops in Sharjah, David has extensive experience with cat

species in central Asia, the Himalayans and Arabia.

Status and Conservation Needs of the Iberian Lynx

The Iberian Lynx special issue of Cat News will present summaries of working

group discussions, including highlights of the major issues currently facing the

Iberian lynx and recommendations for future conservation efforts.

The Cat Specialist Group believes that cooperation and knowledge sharing are

critical for the effective conservation of wild cat species. Such collaboration

prevents the duplication of efforts and avoids any waste of resources or time, both

of which are extremely valuable and scarce.

The Cat Specialist Group is co-organizing the conference Status and Conservation

Needs of the Neotropical Felids, which will take place in São Francisco de Paula,

Brazil on June 9-11, 2005.

the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources

IBAMA. This three-day conference will be the first meeting to ever unite cat experts

from all range countries of South America's 10 cat species. Structured plenary

sessions and focused workshops will collaborate the experience and knowledge of

scientists, conservationists, wildlife managers and government representatives who

specialize in neotropical cat species and their habitats.
