IUCN and the Wildlife Conservation Society to hold two regional African lion
conservation workshops
Africa
is home to most of the world’s lions, and the solutions for lion conservation
must be developed here. There is a need for
a conservation framework that integrates legislative provisions and a system of
incentives for the lion and other wildlife species to successfully compete and
co-exist with human activities outside protected areas. Unless the lion is
perceived to have value by communities and other stakeholders outside protected
areas, it will fail to compete for habitats. The national level is critical for
the development of a conservation framework that leads to the resolution of the
human – lion conflict. These national efforts need to be linked across
geographic regions for enhanced impacts.
