I have worked on wild cat research and conservation since 1991, initially being trained in field ecology and since 1993 progressively focusing more of my projects on evolutionary biology, systematics, conservation genetics and genomics. In the past three decades, I have conducted many research projects targeting all felids, with a main focus on Neotropical species. My projects have contributed to resolve evolutionary relationships and clarify taxonomy, to understand population structure and demographic history (which has enabled improved conservation planning), to better understand species’ ecology and behavior, and to unravel the molecular basis and evolutionary significance of variable pigmentation phenotypes.
