Guidelines for Autors



Cat News is the official newsletter of the IUCN/SSC Cat Specialist Group. Since 1984, 45 bi-annual issues have been published with a wide-ranging collection of scientific papers, articles and news items relevant to wild cat conservation around the world. Cat News is a forum to broadcast on Cat SG activities, provide a platform to members and interested people to present their news on cats and cat studies, to dissiminate news about wild cats and their conservation, and to review interesting cat books. Cat News is distributed to Cat SG members and can be subscribed by non-mebmers by joining the Friends of the Cat Group. Special issues are planned for conference proceedings or specific topics of cat conservation.


1) Original contributions

Original contributions are limited to 4 printed pages or 2500-3000 words, depending on the number of tables, figures, maps and photos. They should contain new information on cat conservation or research. Reports on new projects or new methods are welcome. Every article should have a lead or abstract of a maximum of 500 caracters. It is printed in bold at the beginning of the contribution. Authors should submit with every contribution at least one colour photo relevant to the content of the article. Original contributions will be reviewed by the editors and two external experts.


2) Short communications

This section is for observations of cat behaviour and observations of cats in interesting areas in regard to their range. The maximum length is one printed page (approx. 500-750 words,  allowing for a colour photo, a figure or a map). Every article should have a lead or abstract of a maximum of 300 caracters. It is printed in bold at the beginning of the contribution. For observations, please always provide date and place (including longitude and latitude). Short communications will be reviewed by the editors and/or an external expert.


Latin names

The Latin name is added to the first mentioning of a species in the abstract or the text, not in the title. Latin names are formatted italic and not separated with brackets: e.g. the cheetah Acinonyx jubatus has been…..


Illustrations 

Illustrations are line drawings, maps or photographs, and should be referred to in the text as Fig. 1 etc. Captions are mandatory for all illustrations. Photo credits should be mentioned in the caption. Do not integrate captions or authors’ names into an illustration, but provide them separately. If figures are produced in Excel, please also send the Excel file. All photos  and colour figures have to be submitted as .jpg files in a resolution of at least 300 dpi (preferable 450 dpi) and a width of a minimum of 5.5 cm (column width) and a maximum of 18 cm (page width).

Tables

Tables have to be headed and should be numbered consequtively. Tables should not be larger than 18 cm (page width) with Times New Roman size 10. Keep them as limited as possible.

Original contributions and short communications will be reviewed by at least one external expert.

 

Original contributions and short communications should be submitted electronically as attachment in Word format. Alternatively, a hard copy and a CD can be mailed to IUCN/SSC Cat Specialist Group, c/o KORA, Thunstrasse 31, CH-3074 Muri, Switzerland.

 

3) News from around the world

News cover articles on cat conservation that were published in a magazin, newspaper, press cutting, on the web or as a report.

 

4) Book reviews

Book reviews should not be longer than 500 words and need to be submitted with a .jpg of the title page (300 dpi resolution). Please also provide publisher, year of publication, ISBN number and price.
