Cats
in China
China is a land of cats. Almost a third of the 37
living cat species worldwide occur in the Peoples’ Republic of China.
This richness is no surprise considering the size and the diversity of the
country. For the project “Cats in China”, the Wildlife
Management Division of the Department of Wildlife Conservation of the Chinese
State Forestry Administration, the National Wildlife Research and Development
Centre, and the IUCN/SSC Cat Specialist Group have collaborated to compile the
present knowledge in order to produce a baseline document on the status of cat
species in China, with the aim of promoting surveys and research on cats. In this Special Issue of Cat News on Cats in China, we
present an overview of the state of knowledge of cats in China, in the hope of
raising awareness for cat conservation in China at a national and international
level.

The
Jauguar in Brazil
This
special issue of Cat News explores how researchers and
conservationists in Brazil are working to meet the three
primary challenges to regional jaguar conservation:
First,
the varied and frequently controversial interactions
of jaguars with people across the country have led to
distinct human perceptions and prejudices.
Second,
the jaguar is a nationally protected endangered species
in Brazil, but it is virtually impossible to practice
law enforcement over ranchers that retaliate against
jaguars suspected of predating cattle.
Third,
although there is still an abundance of habitat favorable
to jaguars in the Amazon, and on a smaller scale in
some portions of the Pantanal, Brazil is witnessing
an explosion of anthropogenic activities such as agriculture
and cattle ranching which are drastically reducing jaguar
populations in key habitats such as the Cerrado, Caatinga
and the Atlantic Forest, the latter of which is on the
verge of extinction already.

Status
and Conservation Needs of Cheetahs in Southern Africa
Cheetah conservation
activities outside of protected areas have mostly taken
place in the southern African region where a network
of researchers and conservationists has developed. In
December 2005, the Cheetah Conservation Fund in Namibia
hosted the first Southern African Regional Cheetah Workshop
where the idea for this special issue of Cat News was
developed. The workshop brought together 32 cheetah
researchers and conservationists from six countries.
This special issue of
Cat News highlights the accomplishments in cheetah conservation
in the southern African region over the past few years
and prioritizes research and conservation objectives
for the future.
