Status and Conservation Needs of Cheetahs in Southern Africa

Cheetah conservation activities outside of protected areas have mostly taken place in the southern African region where a network of researchers and conservationists has developed. To save the survival of the species in the Caucasus, urgent conservation actions are needed. As a preparation of a strategic planing workshop, a special issue of Cat News was produced where the present knowledge on the ecology, the status and distribution of the leopard, as well as recent activites for its conservation in the Caucasus ecoregion are summarized. Additionally, a habitat model provides guidance for future activites. In the last chapter the general conditions for the conservation of the leopard are presented.
