Title: The lynx and the trout – hunter and smuggler’s targets

Published in: “Shpic” – daily newspaper

Text written by: Goran Naumovski

Summary: The article is about the illegal trade of endangered species goods. The lynx and the Ohrid trout are endangered in Macedonia. The breeders of private hunting grounds are paying up to 7000 Euro in order to have one live lynx and 2000 Euro for griffon vulture. The illegal overhunting of rare and endangered animals has led to the extinction of four species from our territory (eg. the golden jackal). At present, 16 mammals and 20 species of fish are under threat. The interview with Mile Jakimovski (director of the nature protection office in the MoEPP) in the following text is concerning the Red data book which will be published in Macedonia. This Red data book will serve to raise the public awareness. In this book some of the most threatened animals will be presented, like the Balkan lynx and the vultures.

Macedonia is often used as a transit country for smuggling wild animals. Several examples of animal smuggling are given in the following text.
