Abstract: Ivanov_&_Melovski_2006_Rare_species_on_IUCN_Red_List_-_TEA_moderna_MK.pdf

For a special section in “Tea Moderna” magazine, a journalist visited the MES office and interviewed some MES members on the topic of rare and endemic species from Macedonia that are listed on the IUCN Red List. Dime Melovski and Gjorgi Ivanov used this opportunity to discuss lynx as a species which is fighting for its survival in Macedonia:

Ecological societies are alarming:

Rare species of animals and birds on the Red List

The project on large carnivore conservation, especially lynx, is conducted in several phases: "The first phase of the project is collecting data for lynx and its movement by questionnaires conducted in almost every village in Macedonia. In winter, we are going to put camera traps on places with high frequency of lynx presence. The last phase of the project is radio-collaring of lynx".

"Lynx has no natural enemies, because it's on the top of the trophic chain. So, the only enemy of lynx are humans. All available data on lynx are collected by conducting questionnaires. Till now, no monitoring or survey on lynx has been done. We can not tell, for sure, the population number of lynx in Macedonia. Because of that, the first phase of the lynx conservation project will be conducting questionnaires, and after that, monitoring which can give as all answers for lynx. Lynx can be saved only on this way".

Besides humans, there are also other threats: "One of the main threats for lynx is the small reproductive potential of lynx population, as well as the poaching, habitat degradation, poisoning".
