Camera trapping

Camera trapping, the use of automatically released photo cameras to picture animals, has become a standard method to census elusive species. Especially for spotted cats, which can be identified individually from good pictures, this non-invasive method has a high potential and is today used for a variety of species.

Since November 2007, the Albanian and Macedonian lynx teams of the Balkan Lynx Recovery Programme use camera-traps occasionally (see some pictures below). A first intensive session is however planned in Macedonia from mid February to mid April 2008.

The importance of the use of camera traps goes beyond the lynx pictures taken as the presence of other species can be demonstrated, and it is an important communication and public relation tool.
